1975:
Margaret (Maggie) Bell is a Scottish rock vocalist who, in the mid 1960s, was discovered by The Yardbirds' manager Peter Grant, who agreed to produce and manage Bell's then band, The Power.  Grant renamed the band Stone the Crows.  Bell signed on with Swan Song label in 1974 and put out her solo album, Suicide Sal, with Jimmy Page on guitar for two of the tracks in 1975.

1976:
Led Zeppelin's seventh album, Presence, was released on this day. Six of the songs on the original album are credited to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, with the seventh, Royal Orleans, credited to all four. Robert Plant had been seriously injured in a car accident on the Greek island of Rhodes on 5 August 1975, forcing the band to cancel a planned US tour. In October they regrouped in the US for a month of rehearsals at SIR Studios in Hollywood CA, and the album was recorded in just 18 days at Musicland Studios in Munich, West German, with Plant singing from his wheelchair. The rush was because the Rolling Stones were booked for the studio after Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page reportedly just gave up sleeping to get the album mixed in the time available to them.

1966:
The Yardbirds performed Stroll On in Michelangelo Antonioni's movie, Blowup, though they weren't the director's first choice. Steve Howe, the late guitarist for Yes and at the time with a band called Tomorrow (a.k.a The in Crowd) later told Pete Frame in Frame's book, Complete Rock Family Trees (1993), "We went on the set and started preparing for that guitar-smashing scene in the club. They even went as far as making up a bunch of Gibson 175 replicas ... and then we got dropped for The Yardbirds, who were a bigger name. That's why you see Jeff Beck smashing my guitar rather than his!"

Antonioni had wanted The Who for Blowup. If he couldn't have Pete Townshend, he still wanted the guitar-smashing routine. Ironically, although that scene was staged, Beck's violent temper-tantrums onstage would contribute to his leaving The Yardbirds less than two years later.

1988:
"We're going to do tunes from the past, the very distant past, the present and the future." Jimmy Page said at the Kansas City show.
At one point a sweat soaked Page raised the body of his guitar for all to see. Then he kissed it. The image shared significance with that of the Greek Olympian of antiquity, who would ceremoniously place the wreath of victory on his own head.

2014:
On this day the open edition of Jimmy Page's pictorial autobiography was released.

From his website:  "Jimmy has chosen every one of the 650 photographs. There are many rare finds, such as Led Zeppelin playing an impromptu gig in a nightclub in Jersey, or double-exposure shots of Jimmy and Brian Jones by Ian Stewart. Jimmy chose one of his favourite portrait shots for the book cover: a 1977 passport photo, shot by Neal Preston on board Led Zeppelin's private tour plane."

1994:
And then it was done. The practicing, the recording and filming outdoors in Wales and Morocco, and indoors with orchestras in front of an audience at the London Television Centre, was completed for the MTV Unledded telecast. The notion of "unplugged" had been given up in favor of "Unledded" and all that the name implied.

And it was good.

  • 1970 Led Zeppelin - Hampton, VA, Hampton Coliseum
  • 1994 Page & Plant - Wales, Corris Slate Quarry to record for No Quarter: Unledded
1969:
This show was performed on a revolving stage. Good for the audience half the time.

1970:
The band and crew were already old hands at touring; this concert was at the beginning of Led Zeppelin's sixth US tour - the sixth in two years' time. The first week's shows were cancelled due to John Paul Jones' father's health. Peter Grant was now booking larger venues with five-figure audience capacity. After this show there were rumors that the band had been so loud the coliseum ceiling cracked.

1994:
On this day Jimmy Page and Robert Plant recorded songs for the MTV Unledded telecast in a slate quarry. Because why not.

It turned out that the unlovely quarry actually had pretty good acoustics provided by the huge mound of slate. The electrical lines overhead, which can be seen in the images below, kind of add to the weirdness of the whole thing.

My bad

"Got a monkey on my back, gonna change my ways tonight.  Nobody's fault but mine."

Mage Music 69

I could have scheduled a day off, I could have asked someone to be a guest blogger, but I didn't.  I could have figured out even a short post for today but I didn't - instead I made sauerkraut (yes I did).  And so all I've got to say is that there's no post this week and it's nobody's fault but mine.

Not a Communication Breakdown, hopefully, or even that I'm Dazed and Confused (or at least more than usual). That's The Way it is right now, is all. If you don't like it, I guess That's Nobody's Fault But Mine

You know, maybe one of these days I'll do a blog post that's entirely song titles - but not this time.

It's Your Magick Too

"A rock concert is in fact a rite involving the evocation and transmutation of energy."
~ William Burroughs, Crawdaddy Magazine, June 1975. Rock Magic: Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin, And a search for the elusive Stairway to Heaven

Mage Music 43: Your Magick jimmypagemusic.blogspot.comMage Music 43

This week's Mage Music came about because of a birthday playlist request.  You may have noticed I stopped doing playlists in these posts.  I realized how much time choosing the right music takes and, as important as this blog is to me, I nevertheless decided I needed to use that time for other things.  That makes this playlist a little more special.

I wanted to pick songs that have Magick for me personally (even though the list is meant for someone else), not just songs that are well performed.  The songs are not necessarily beautiful, the playlist doesn't even flow well from one song to the next.  I picked the songs because it seems to me in each one Jimmy Page was pushing, exploring, reaching for something deeper and more meaningful than ordinary music conveys.  I chose these particular songs, too, because the more closely I listen, the more they prompt me to join in that reaching.

This made me think about Mr. Burroughs' comment about what a rock concert is about, and what music brings to us, the audience - or, more specifically, about the Magick from the audience point of view whether or not the audience is at a live concert.

But I'm not going to talk about any of that this week.

You'll have to forgive me - or be PO'd if you prefer - for my not going further with these ideas right now.  I'm taking a little time off for other work.   Perhaps some of you have thoughts on this - I welcome them.  Right now, though, I'm leaving you with the birthday playlist and getting back to my other work.  Enjoy!
