1969:
As Jimmy Page has said in interviews, Led Zeppelin, the original album is in a way his favorite because it is the one that started it all. Although it took just 36 hours' studio time (over the course of a few weeks) it was nevertheless a long time coming. Jimmy Page knew the sound he wanted, he knew where he wanted to go with the music, and he simply made it happen when the time was ripe.

"I wanted artistic control in a vice grip, because I knew exactly what I wanted to do with these fellows. In fact, I financed and completely recorded the first album before going to Atlantic... It wasn't your typical story where you get an advance to make an album—we arrived at Atlantic with tapes in hand... Atlantic's reaction was very positive – I mean they signed us, didn't they?"

1977:
The belly dancer. This was the last concert before the sudden death of Robert Plant's son, Karac. Led Zeppelin would never again perform in the United States.

On This Day 31 March

Solo in shades of blue....
1975 31 March On This Day Maggie Bell's Suicide Sal released feat. Jimmy Page guitar
  • 1969 Led Zeppelin - London England at Cooks Ferry Inn
  • 1970 Led Zeppelin - Philadelphia PA at The Spectrum
  • 1976  Presence album released
  • 1986 The Firm - Philadelphia PA at The Spectrum
  • 1995 Page & Plant Unledded Tour - Auburn Hills MI at The Palace of Auburn Hills
1970 Jimmy Page / Led Zeppelin, Philadelphia PA

1975:
Margaret (Maggie) Bell is a Scottish rock vocalist who, in the mid 1960s, was discovered by The Yardbirds' manager Peter Grant, who agreed to produce and manage Bell's then band, The Power.  Grant renamed the band Stone the Crows.  Bell signed on with Swan Song label in 1974 and put out her solo album, Suicide Sal, with Jimmy Page on guitar for two of the tracks in 1975.

1976:
Led Zeppelin's seventh album, Presence, was released on this day. Six of the songs on the original album are credited to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, with the seventh, Royal Orleans, credited to all four. Robert Plant had been seriously injured in a car accident on the Greek island of Rhodes on 5 August 1975, forcing the band to cancel a planned US tour. In October they regrouped in the US for a month of rehearsals at SIR Studios in Hollywood CA, and the album was recorded in just 18 days at Musicland Studios in Munich, West German, with Plant singing from his wheelchair. The rush was because the Rolling Stones were booked for the studio after Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page reportedly just gave up sleeping to get the album mixed in the time available to them.

Mage Music: Simply The Best

SE Redhill Sonnetta,
not drinking

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make her drink

Mage Music 13

  • A musician can offer the music but can't make you like it.
  • A Mage can offer the Magick but can't make you feel it.
  • Borgs bring change but it's not an offer:  Resistance is futile.
  • Lucifer brought Light - but that actually was an offer, not an obligation to accept.

Whaa?

First, for reference:  Rolling Stone Magazine published a list of what they consider to be the 100 greatest guitarists ever in November 2011, and recently came out with a special collectors print edition (October 25, 2012).  Both online and print versions provide justification for placement of each guitarist by one of the judges.  The panel of fifty some odd “top guitarists and other experts” who did the ranking named Jimi Hendrix number one, Eric Clapton number two and Jimmy Page as number three.  Ninety seven other guitarists were listed - some of whom I just couldn't figure.  A few pretty darned good ones didn’t appear at all.  <Shaking head in puzzlement>.

Jimmy Page number THREE?  Really?

Really:  In the opinion of the people doing the judging, Jimmy Page came out number three.  Thus the aphorisms at the top of this page, because what is most important about the Rolling Stone Magazine list is that it doesn’t matter one bit.  “Best guitarist” doesn’t equal Mage Musician, and the only true judge of who might be a Mage Musician that matters for you is you.

I’m giving myself a little break this week, so am cutting it short.  Below are links to Rolling Stone’s idea of “key tracks” for Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, followed by my own suggested alternatives for your consideration.  I'm not saying anything about who's the best guitarist, but I am suggesting that there is another way to think about music.  But don’t take my word for it – you be the judge.

Bonus: The promised more info on Beck's Bolero coming right after this - no waiting a week for the next post!
