On This Day 6 October

He's the only one
1976 (more likely 1972) 06 October On This Day, Jimmy Page visits Hong Kong

  • 1966 The Yardbirds - Birmingham, England at Odeon Theatre
  • 1972 Led Zeppelin visit Hong Kong (almost certainly incorrectly posted as 1976)
1972/1976:
Although the jimmypage.com website has posted that he visited Hong Kong ini 1976, it more certainly was during the Japan '72 tour. Jimmy Page said in the Led Zeppelin 1972 section (p. 203) of his photo autobiography Jimmy Page by Jimmy Page,  "I had this suit made in one of those 24-hour tailors on a visit to to Hong Kong", so we know he was in that city in 1972.

Jimmy Page also refers on his webpage to the ocean liner, Queen Elizabeth, which had been sold to a Hong Kong businessmen who had renamed the ship the Seawise University and who had begun to convert the ship into a floating university. In 1972 the Seawise University caught fire in the Hong Kong harbor and was capsized by the water used to fight the flames. Before 1976 the vessel had been declared a shipping hazard. It had already been dismantled for scrap and the remains of the hull were underwater by 1976, so Jimmy Page wouldn't have been able to take that photo of it shown on his webpage in that year.

October 1988 Guitar World Magazine
1988:
Jimmy Page was about one third of his way through the Outrider tour, so this seems to be a good time to post this Guitar World cover with his photo with the harp-guitar.

Today:
I haven't promoted my book, Mage Music: The Blog for a while, so I'm doing that today. I haven't been writing about Magick here since I started the daily On This Day posts, but that's what I focused on when I started out. For those who prefer lengthy reading in book form rather than on blogs, Mage Music: The Blog
is a compilation of selected posts from this blog of May 7, 2012 through November 22, 2014.

Book description from the Amazon page:  "The blog was begun with the intention of discussing and analyzing the music of the extraordinary guitarist, Jimmy Page. It evolved into a broader look at the creative nature of Magick and the connection of Magick with music and other forms of art. This book is the text of that blog. Mage Music: the Blog is not a grimoire. You will find no spells or instructions for making magical objects or invoking entities because the focus is the ur-Magick: the source of the energy and the fundamentals common to all specific practices of Magick. You will, however, find out how to connect with your own Magick, and to appreciate the Magick of the Mage Musician, Jimmy Page."

Mage Music: the Blog is also available for Kindle.

First book signing NOT

A day late and a dollar short. You've no doubt heard the expression before. I just experienced it firsthand -- but I survived.

Here's my story: I ordered some books so I could sell and sign them at Mage Music: the Blog's debut at the library in town. When checked delivery date, it was for the day after the event. No, no, no, that will never do. So I paid extra for expedited shipping that would get the box of books to me the day before.

You can guess without my saying what happened. Ice and snow on the roads. The local UPS man is amazing at what road conditions he'll brave to get the deliveries through on time, but he can't deliver what he never receives at his end.

I contacted UPS. Got one of those "read responses from menu" customer service types. Oh he's so sorry about the delivery. It seems that UPS screwed up somewhere along the line and the package was delayed. Oh so sorry, nothing he can do. Not even tell me where the box is.

He suggested that I keep tracking the delivery. The tracking page had not updated in 24 hours. Oh so sorry, nothing he could do about that.

To make a not very long story even shorter, I went to the library event last night without a box of books. I borrowed one from a friend to use as an example. My talk went well. No one seemed shocked that I would write about music or Magick.

I will say, though, that when a few people said "I want to buy one" it was like little stabs to the heart (or ego) telling them they'd have to order the book from Amazon. Because a bird in hand is worth two in the bush, as long as I'm quoting aphorisms.

The good news is that the library system is buying a bunch of copies for the various branches. The other good news is that when I got home last night, the box of books was waiting in my car where I had parked it before catching a ride to town with my friend yesterday afternoon.

It's all good. I will get to autograph books another day.

My next project, I think, might be to make some Oracle cards using the images from this blog.  Stay tuned!

♪
Oh, by the way.  Speaking of Oracle cards - I threw some cards last night using a non-tarot deck I'm fond of, and got a super reading.  I wouldn't ordinarily share such things, but since we're all in this together, here are the cards with a brief, edited explanation.

Mage Music book reading / The Burning Serpent Oracle cards

The Book of Life: Secrets, concealed or revealed Destiny, "what is written." Knowledge, education.

The Red Clover: Something that takes place over time.

The Lily: Wisdom.  Mature man.

The Owl and the Mouse: Communication. Wisdom.

Update - Mage Music: the Blog book

I'm waiting for a proof copy to come in the mail. Should be this week. I will go through it to see what needs fixing. I already know the cover isn't going to work - it's not the cover I've already shown you.  Which do you like better?

Do you like the version on the left or on the right better?

Besides the cover, I've got to see what interior changes are needed, submit them and I do believe after that point it'll be ready to rock n roll!

Progress report

Just thought I'd post a progress report so you all know I'm not just slacking off.

Mage Music: The Blog is about halfway edited. I had hoped to get it out into the world by the first of the month (that is, December, not January) but I had to first finish editing and printing up another manuscript (fiction) to send out this week.

Now I can get back to Mage Music: The Blog, which will be available at a very reasonable price on Amazon for Kindle. I'll let you know soon as I know.

Soon as that is done I'll get working on the book on creativity and Magick that this blog has been the proving ground for. I'll let you know how that goes, too.

Exciting times!
