  • 1984 Jimmy Page with Roy Harper at Battersea Park, London
1973:
This was the third performance in a row at Madison Square Garden. At the end of Whole Lotta Love, East Indian fire-eater Mike Quashie came dancing out on the stage with a couple of torches. He lit John Bonham's gong and one drumstick, but Bonzo just kept on playing.

This is the show where the robbery occurred of MSG receipts from the safety deposit box at the Drake Hotel. Originally reported as $203,000, the amount was $180,000 and no one was ever arrested for the theft. The band later sued the hotel and received a settlement.

After the show, the band went to a party held by Ahmet Ertegun to present gold records for Houses of the Holy.

This final night was also the final performance in this 1973 North American tour.

1973:
"Originally, we saw the whole essence of our live performance as something that the audience listened to very carefully, picking up on what was going on, the spontaneity and musicianship. And you can’t do that if you’re running around the stage all night, or at least we couldn’t back then.” By 1973, however, “we were much more ambitious, in that respect. We really wanted to take the live performances as far as they could go".
~Jimmy Page, Mick Wall interview, Times Online 1 Nov 2008

"The kind of speed we were moving at, the creative juices in the air, the whole thing was just an absolute mixture of adrenaline, chemical, euphoria ... and there were no brakes. We couldn't stop what was happening. We had no idea what it even was. But we just kept trying, pushing forward, every show."

Kezar:  Not only a great show, but some great photographers were there to capture the moments.  There were mixed reviews, with Rolling Stone continuing its vendetta against the band, stating "Led Zeppelin - a limp blimp" and wasting too much good paper and ink reporting on the volume of the music and the amount of money taken in rather than the concert itself.  On the other hand, Charles Shaar Murray of New Musical Express (NME) said "...one of the finest musical events I've ever had the privilege to attend."

  • 1995 Page & Plant Unledded Tour - Cleveland OH at Gund Arena

1969:
"Jimmy Page, bent over his guitar and straining for unknown notes, listening hard because he’s right there in the middle of that Led Zeppelin wall of sound, sweat oozing torrential down his face, and dripping off the ends of that long wavy hair down onto the guitar and one expects that guitar to fizz and steam because it’s so near boiling point."
~ Record Mirror, April 1969

1972:
Houses of the Holy was recorded in several locations, including Mick Jagger's Stargroves, using the Rolling Stones' mobile recording unit. Jagger had purchased the estate two years prior. Besides the Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who and other bands recording at Stargroves, the estate was used to film several Dr. Who episodes.

1973:
Houses of the Holy's cover photo was taken at the Giant's Causeway on the northeastern coast of Ireland. Multiple photos of siblings Stefan and Samantha Gates were used to create a composite image. Arthur Clarke's 1953 science fiction novel, Childhood's End, may have provided inspiration for the cover. At the end of that novel, the only remnants of humanity left are children who have evolved to serve a cosmic intelligence, the Overmind, and who are no longer shackled to merely physical existence. Coincidentally, or maybe not, Clarke has said that the aliens' ships in Childhood's End were inspired by barrage balloons he saw over London during World War II. Barrage balloons, of course, look very much like zeppelins.
