The LA Forum shows are considered some of the best of Led Zeppelin's performances. The 23 June show is referred to the Badge Holders show as Robert Plant made several dedications to the badge holder people. One of the high quality bootlegs of this show is entitled For Badgeholders Only..

The boys were so hot that night that no one faults the show for some fumbles.  The whole band stopped to wait after the first song when Jimmy's strap on double-neck broke and Raymond fixed it. Keith Moon of The Who showed up on stage during Over The Top (Moby Dick) and appeared on and off thereafter.  The band got lost after John Paul Jones missed a change during Kashmir, a song that sounds deceptively simple to play but isn't.  Mr. Jones has been quoted as saying he stuck a piece of a paper on his keyboards to help him remember.

On This Day 18 June

Fans of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin are still willing to travel to other countries to hear the music.

1965 18 June On This Day Jimmy Page attends John Mayall and Bluesbreakers concert,
jams with Eric Clapton at home
John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a British blues band, was founded by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist John Mayall.  In its on-again-off-again history, there have been more than 100 different combinations of musicians performing under that name. Mayall started the band in 1963 and that iteration, which lasted until 1967, included Eric Clapton from April to August 1965 and November 1965 to July 1966.

In a 2013  interview John Mayall was asked about recording the single I’m Your Witchdoctorproduced by Jimmy Page:
Q:  Do you have any memories from this time of Jimmy?
Mayall: Not really, I mean I had known him before we did that because he used to play at The Marquee Club in a trio situation so I ended up seeing him quite a few times but he was just one of the guys really.
If I had been the interviewer I'd have wanted to know if Mayall had any regrets about not working more with Jimmy Page.  Of course, Jimmy Page shot into the musical stratosphere so quickly after then that everyone who wasn't with him was left far, far behind.

  • 1980 Led Zeppelin - Cologne (Köln), Germany at Köln Sporthalle
  • 1995 Page & Plant - Unledded Tour - Luneburg, Germany at New Music Festival

The 1972 Seattle Led Zeppelin concert was the concert that wasn't supposed to happen.  It wasn't the band's fault. Originally scheduled for Vancouver BC, Canadian authorities decided to not grant Led Zeppelin a license to perform before the band even got a chance, due to previous troublemakers at other bands' shows.

Led Zeppelin fans ended up being bused down to Seattle for the show.

  • 1970 Led Zeppelin - Dallas at Dallas Memorial Auditorium
  • 1973 Houses Of The Holy released
  • 1995 Page & Plant Unledded Tour - Cleveland OH at Gund Arena

1969:
"Jimmy Page, bent over his guitar and straining for unknown notes, listening hard because he’s right there in the middle of that Led Zeppelin wall of sound, sweat oozing torrential down his face, and dripping off the ends of that long wavy hair down onto the guitar and one expects that guitar to fizz and steam because it’s so near boiling point."
~ Record Mirror, April 1969

1972:
Houses of the Holy was recorded in several locations, including Mick Jagger's Stargroves, using the Rolling Stones' mobile recording unit. Jagger had purchased the estate two years prior. Besides the Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who and other bands recording at Stargroves, the estate was used to film several Dr. Who episodes.

1972 John Bonham and jimmy Page at Stargroves
1973:
Houses of the Holy's cover photo was taken at the Giant's Causeway on the northeastern coast of Ireland. Multiple photos of siblings Stefan and Samantha Gates were used to create a composite image. Arthur Clarke's 1953 science fiction novel, Childhood's End, may have provided inspiration for the cover. At the end of that novel, the only remnants of humanity left are children who have evolved to serve a cosmic intelligence, the Overmind, and who are no longer shackled to merely physical existence. Coincidentally, or maybe not, Clarke has said that the aliens' ships in Childhood's End were inspired by barrage balloons he saw over London during World War II. Barrage balloons, of course, look very much like zeppelins.

According to Dave Lewis, in his book The Tight But Loose Files, the Sydney show was on 16 November. So maybe the show aired the next night. Then again, according to the Get A Grip Tour Dates, Aerosmith played in Buenos Aires on 18 and 19 November, not on the 17th.

But maybe it did all happen on 17 November.  Maybe it was just Jimmy Page Magick.

  • 1995 Page & Plant Unledded Tour - Chicago, IL at United Center
  • 1999 Jimmy Page with The Black Crowes - New York, NY at Roseland Ballroom (day 2)

1995:
It's difficult to read the text for the On This Day for 1995, so here it is:
One of the high points of the Unledded tour was that we would combine with an orchestra in each major city and at this concert we had members from the Chicago Symphony, considered to be the best classical orchestra at that time. There was an alternative setlist available for this night, which wasn't used. I thought this would be interesting to include for people to see how we were thinking at that time.
Setlist
Alternate
1. Egyptian Intro/Immigrant Song/The Wanton Song 1. Thank You
2. Bring It On Home 2. Bring It On Home
3. Over The Hills and Far Away 3. Ramble On
4. Thank You 4. Shake My Tree
5. No Quarter 5. Lullaby
6. That's The Way 6. No Quarter
7. Hurdy Gurdy solo 7. Gallows Pole
8. Gallows Pole 8. Levee Breaks
9. Since I've Been Loving You 9. Hey Hey
10. The Song Remains The Same 10. Song Remains
11. Going To California 11. Since I've Been Loving You
12. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You 12. Friends
13. Four Sticks 13. Calling To You

15. In The Evening 15. In The Evening
16. Black Dog 16. Black Dog
17. Kashmir 17. Kashmir

In my (not so) humble opinion the orchestra, good as it is, is not necessary. In fact, I've had a hard time with the Page & Plant collaborations all along because so much of feels overblown, filling all the space, bludgeoning with quantity instead of stabbing with quality. The resulting reduction in contrast means there's little chance for the light/dark that Jimmy Page has always used so well.

1966:
Cliff Richard, born Harry Webb, is a British pop singer, musician, actor and philanthropist. He is the third-top-selling singles artist in UK Chart history after the Beatles and Elvis Presley. His backing band, The Shadows, grew from 1950s UK skiffle groups. They started out as The Drifters with Harry Webb on vocals and guitar and using the stage name, Cliff Richard. Cliff Richard and the Shadows dominated British pop music in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and Jimmy Page would have been quite aware of them. The Shadows split in 1968 but reformed with new members a few years later and continued to to perform and tour through a final tour in 2010.

In 1980, Richard changed his to his stage name legally and also that year he received the O.B.E. from the Queen for services to music and charity. In 1995, Richard was appointed a Knight Bachelor, the first rock star to be awarded that honor.

Jimmy Page wasn't needed for his guitar or bass talents on the Cliff Richard songs, but he was called on for his skills with harmonica. The video below for Time Drags By is from the movie referred to in the On This Day post - you don't need me to tell you that the actor pretending to play harmonica isn't Jimmy Page.  Don't confuse La La La Song (a.k.a. La La La La) with Led Zeppelin's La La, either. They don't sound at all alike. But interesting about the name.
