Huddie William Ledbetter (1888 – 1949) was an American folk and blues musician best known as Lead Belly (his preferred spelling). He usually played the twelve-string guitar but, like John Paul Jones, Lead Belly could also play other musical instruments: piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and accordion.
Lead Belly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Fred Gerlach (1925 - 2009) carried the mantle from Lead Belly. In 1962 he recorded an album for Folkways Records of his traditional blues singing and intricate twelve-string guitar technique.
