Following the show at the Forum, the four members of Led Zeppelin and Peter Grant showed up at the Troubadour Club for Fairport Convention 's second set and jammed with them. Sandy Denny was Fairport Convention's singer. Denny was later to contribute vocals on Led Zeppelin's The Battle of Evermore. She was the only guest vocalist Led Zeppelin ever recorded with. During later live performances of the song John Paul Jones sang Denny's vocals, with sometimes John Bonham joining in.

During the jam, Bonham attacked Dave Mattacks' drums with his usual enthusiasm. Later Mattacks had to repair the kit and replace the heads. It was reported that the bass drum jumped forward three or four inches with Bonzo's first strike.

The story goes that after the Fairport/Zeppelin jam they all moved to the after hours bar, Barney's Beanery, where Janis Joplin was hanging out. A drinking contest between Fairport's Dave Pegg, Bonham and Janis Joplin ensued. No report of a winner has surfaced.

The jam was taped, and according to Dave Lewis, it ended up in Peter Grant's possession. That recording has not surfaced, either.

Bad Company had only begun performing live in May of 1974.  Their first album, Bad Company, was released by Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label.  Jimmy Page joined Bad Company for an encore of Rock Me Baby at the Shaefer Music Festival in New York's Central Park on September 4, 1974.

In 1983, Jimmy Page appeared with the ARMS charity concert series.  Steve Winwood provided vocals for Jimmy Page's set at the first shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Paul Rodgers, of Bad Company, replaced Winwood for the four-city ARMS tour in the United States.  Rodgers joined Jimmy Page in The Firm in 1985 and 1986.

The band was on a sabbatical from performing, but they were busy wrapping up what Robert Plant had referred to as a "rather gargantuan film". That year they also set up Swan Song Records (with Bad Company as one of the initial bands), and recorded Physical Graffiti, but Jimmy Page missed performing on stage. In fact, the band members, individually and in various combinations, jammed with other bands during their so-called sabbatical.

Four bands played at the one-off show unofficially called "ZZ Top's First Annual Texas Size Rompin' Stompin' Barn Dance and Barbeque": Joe Cocker, Bad Company, ZZ Top, and Santana. Bad Company invited Jimmy Page to join them for their encore, Rock Me Baby. JP wasn't planning to play, so he borrowed a Gibson guitar. Afterwards he said "...it was so great to get up on stage again".

It was a hot day, the food and drink ran out early, and the fans basically destroyed the AstroTurf. That was the last time until 1995 that a rock band played the University of Texas' Memorial Stadium in Austin.

Jimmy Page at ARMS

The ARMS concerts were a series of ten fundraisers for Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis that took place from September through December 1983.  What was planned as a one-off at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 September, became a tour of nine shows with changing line-ups across North America.

History
Ronnie Lane, an English bass guitarist and founding member of the Small Faces (1965-69) and the Faces (1969–73) was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the late 1970s.  In 1983 Ronnie Lane's girlfriend, Boo Oldfield, approached producer Glyn Johns with the idea of a fundraiser to benefit ARMS, a group that was treating Lane for MS.  Johns was already producing a Prince's Trust Rock Gala (a youth charity) featuring Eric Clapton at Royal Albert Hall on 21 September 1983.

Setlist
At the initial ARMS show each of the star artists performed mini-setlists. The show ended with three songs that all the ARMS musicians joined in.  The third and final song at RAH, Goodnight Irene, featuring Ronnie Lane.

Eric Clapton
•  Everybody Oughta Make A Change
•  Rita May
•  Lay Down Sally
•  Ramblin' On My Mind/Have You Ever Loved a Woman
•  Cocaine
Andy Fairweather Low
•  Man Smart (Woman Smarter)

•  Who's To Blame (with Steve Winwood )
•  Stairway to Heaven (Instrumental)
All
•  Tulsa Time
•  Layla
•  Goodnight, Irene (with Ronnie Lane)
Michael Palin said of Jimmy Page in his book Halfway to Hollywood: Diaries 1980--1988 (p 271),
"I am tempted by a phone call from Ray Cooper to attend the first of a two-night concert in aid of Multiple Sclerosis, in which many great rock stars of the '60's, all friends of Ronnie Lane who has MS, will be appearing, including Ray [on drums]...
...But even Ray is upstaged by the extraordinary appearance of Jimmy Page, who weaves his way around the stage like a man who has been frozen in the last stages of drunkenness, before actually falling over. He sways, reels, totters, bends, but still manages to play superbly."
Note that the second night's show was a charity concert, but not part of ARMS.

ARMS concert series
During the US tour Joe Cocker took lead vocals on With a Little Help from My Friends (Joe Cocker had recorded the Beatles cover in 1968 with Jimmy Page on guitar).  Steve Winwood was unable to do the tour, so Paul Rodgers was Jimmy Page's vocalist, which led to the later formation of The Firm.

Jimmy Page's sets during the US tour included:
•  Prelude
•  Who's To Blame
•  City Sirens
•  Boogie Mama
•  Bird On A Wing
•  Stairway To Heaven
•  Layla
•  With A Little Help From My Friends
•  Goodnight Irene

Ronnie Lane emigrated to the US for his health in 1984. Lane continued to perform and record until 1992. Jimmy Page, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood funded his medical care while Lane was in the US because no royalties were paid from the ARMS concerts until after Lane's death in 1997.

John "Bonzo" Bonham, arguably the world's best rock drummer, was a core part of Led Zeppelin's success.

Around the same time in 1968 that Jimmy Page asked Bonham to join the new band that would become Led Zeppelin, "John had also been receiving other tempting offers from esteemed artists such as Joe Cocker and Chris Farlowe who were in positions to offer John more financially lucrative prospects. Plant and Grant bombarded Bonham with telegrams of persuasion (eight from Plant and fourty from Grant) sent to John at his favourite local pub: 'Three Men in a Boat' in Walsall. Bonham finally decided to accept Grant's offer, joining the band in early September 1968. Bonham said: "I decided I liked their music better than Cocker's or Farlowe's." 1969
In the brief time after the Yardbirds and before Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page did a little session work, including this first studio album of Joe Cocker's. What's interesting in this particular song is how his approach to this kind of work had changed since the early days. A proper session musician didn't (and still doesn't) steal the show from the main attraction, and in this song, of course, the main attraction is the vocalist and the lyrics.

Even so, in With a Little Help from My Friends you can hear that guitar, can't you. While Jimmy Page never lets himself out, while there are soaring riffs, the pure tone and perfectly positioned support has a presence all its own. You know Jimmy Page has totally got this.

Joe Cocker died December 2014, singing practically to the end. He was a wild man back in the day and was always hard for me to watch - he let the music take him so fully that he looked like he was having seizures - but his gritty voice was well suited to the rock, blues and soul that I loved him for. Some of his Beatles covers are better than the original, if you ask me, and of course, there's a bunch of soundtracks with Joe Cocker singing the songs that help make the movies the box office hits they were.

He [Cocker] was a lovely northern lad who I loved a lot and, like many people, I loved his singing. I was especially pleased when he decided to cover "With a Little Help from My Friends" and I remember him and (producer) Denny Cordell coming round to the studio in Savile Row and playing me what they'd recorded and it was just mind-blowing, totally turned the song into a soul anthem and I was forever grateful to him for doing that."
~ Paul McCartney on Joe Cocker's death

Julie Felix is an American born, British-based folk recording artist and show host.  During her singing career she performed at Royal Albert Hall, among other venues.  In 1966 Felix became the resident singer for a BBC television show and hosted her own shows for the BBC from 1968 to 1970. Felix currently lives in England, and is still recording and performing
