Where's Jimmy?
1968 16 December On This Day Led Zeppelin at Bath

  • 1968 Led Zeppelin - Bath, England at Bath Pavilion
  • 1972 Led Zeppelin - Birmingham, England at Birmingham Odeon Theatre

1968
This is one of those times when you have to read carefully. Led Zeppelin didn't play Bath three years in a row on this day, but at three different times in those three years. But that's OK.

Dave Lewis reports in his excellent reference, Led Zeppelin: The Concert File, that Robert and Jimmy learned about what roadies were able to do at the 1968 venue at Bath while they were watching the support band, Yellow Brick Road (not to be confused with the more recent band of that name).  As reported by Dave, that band's roadie ran onto the stage to replace a busted drum.  Prophetically, perhaps, Robert commented, "Jimmy, we must remember that."

It's hard to remember there was ever a time when the boys of Led Zeppelin were still new at their game.

Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from New York City.  The Artists Statement on their website says, "Gogol Bordello's task is to provoke audience out of post-modern aesthetic swamp onto a neo-optimistic communal movement toward new sources of authentic energy.  With acts of music, theatre, chaos, and sorcery..."

The band's lead singer, Eugene Hütz, co-starred with Elijah Wood in the 2005 film, Everything Is Illuminated, with the whole band appearing in one scene.  The band and various members have appeared in other movies as well, including an indie film directed by Madonna.  Elizabeth Sun, mentioned by Jimmy Page on this day, provides backing vocals, percussion, dance and general performance with Gogol Bordello.

Hot. The music is hot. The boys aren't so bad, either.
1993 14 December On This Day Coverdale - Page tour begins in Japan
AUDIO: Saccharin (Coverdale/Page) Soundcloud

  • 1993  Coverdale Page Tour - Tokyo, Japan at Nippon Budokan

1993
Personnel on the Coverdale - Page tour: David Coverdale vocals, Guy Pratt bass, Brett Tuggle keyboards and Danny Carmassi drums.  Oh, and that guy on the guitar: Jimmy Page.

If you've been following this blog, you know I love the Coverdale - Page album.  The live shows a little less, because David Coverdale isn't my favorite frontman.  However, David Coverdale added a certain mature poignancy to the vocals that no other singer brought to Jimmy Page's guitar work, while at the same time diving in and mucking about in the bluesy grit of the music. The Coverdale - Page combination is almost indecent.

For that alone, David Coverdale gets my respect. I still prefer Jimmy Page instrumentals, mind you, but I can happily listen to a lot of Coverdale - Page.

  • 1983 Jimmy Page with Robert Plant for Principle of Moments Tour encore – London at Hammersmith Odeon
1983
Jimmy Page joined Robert Plant for an encore number, Treat Her Right, at Plant's show at Hammersmith Odeon in London.  The song was written by Roy Head and Gene Kurtz, recorded by Head and The Traits and released in 1965. The encore performance was big news because it was the first time since the debanding of Led Zeppelin that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page had performed together.  If the news stories are correct, Robert knew Jimmy was there at the show, but didn't know Jimmy was backstage and willing to play a few licks in front of the audience.

I admire Jimmy Page for finding virtue in other peoples' work, but that doesn't always mean I agree. Thus I have included Led Zeppelin doing Black Dog and also Immigrant Song to get the nasty mashup out of your head (see playlist below).
