Waiting to see Jimmy Page in the Hall of Fame again.  And again.
1995 12 January On This Day Led Zeppelin inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

  • 1969 Led Zeppelin I released
  • 1969 Led Zeppelin - San Francisco, at The Fillmore (day 4 of r)
  • 1975 Led Zeppelin - Brussels, at Vorst Nationaal
  • 1995 Led Zeppelin - inducted in Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame
1995
Twenty-six years after Led Zeppelin I hit the world, Led Zeppelin finally got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Steven Tyler did the induction honors, Tyler opening with a poor imitation of Robert Plant, prompting the latter to whisper, "You wish."

When John Paul Jones took the mic, he made the famous statement that's been quoted so often over the years: "Thank you, my friends, for finally remembering my phone number", referring to the fact that Jones had not been invited to join the Page/Plant Unledded project.
“Well, for my part of this, I must say it's a great honor to be inducted. Actually it's the second time for me, 'cause actually, earlier when I was inducted with the Yardbirds. It's almost like, inducted, induced, and this time it's the forceps. Some of you will get that. But anyway, thank you very much everybody.”

"Big" Jim Sullivan (1941 - 2012) on Jimmy Page (a.k.a. "Little Jim"):
"I'll always remember the first time I met Jimmy. We had a session at Decca studios for Dave Berry. It was the session for 'My Baby Left Me' and Jimmy played lead guitar and I played rhythm. I remember the great solo that he did on that session, it is one of the best constructed rock solos on record.

"The rhythm section that played on a lot of the 60's group record consisted of Jimmy, myself, John Baldwin or John Paul Jones as he liked to be called, and Bobby Graham on Drums. The amount of recordings we did together was amazing and when he said he and John were going to leave he said I should join them too. I said I was married and would stay in sessions a while longer."

1946:
On this day, John Baldwin was born.  Baldwin is, of course, better known today as John Paul Jones, bassist, keyboardist and composer with Led Zeppelin and now embarked on an independent musical career, including the 2009 band, Them Crooked Vultures, with Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme (and guitarist Alain Johannes during live performances).

Interestingly enough, the "other" John Paul Jones, born in 1747, was born John Paul and also adopted the last names "Jones".  However that JPJ did so to hide from law enforcement after winning a duel.

Soundcheck

Eight years ago today, just about now (allowing for the time difference and when you read this), the final O2 rehearsal/soundcheck was happening.

Tickets for the show itself, available through a lottery system, had been snatched up by some 16-18,000 lucky devils, with literally millions of us losers sobbing about it.

Some lucky suckers had gotten access to the rehearsal/soundcheck, too.

2007 Led Zeppelin O2 rehearsal
Meanwhile, back home millions of us remained crying into our beer (or wine, in my case), not having won
one of those precious concert tickets or an invitation to the soundcheck. But we were not idle. No we were not. We were searching online for every scrap of information, any report - first or second hand, or even rumor. Anything at all.

Much had been kept secret, but in this day and age, there are always leaks. What was out there was hard to distinguish from rumors, but you had to find trustworthy sources and, well, trust them. Early feedback from Cameron Crowe (who was not there but had heard from someone who was) was that the soundcheck was thrilling.

The few hundred or so blessed witnesses to this penultimate performance were not allowed to record, but yes, that happened anyway.

The setlist for the sound check included:
 Good Times Bad Times
 Ramble On
 In My Time Of Dying
 No Quarter
 Nobody's Fault But Mine
 D'yer Mak'er
 Communication Breakdown

It was already common knowledge that the band had been practicing For Your Life, a song they'd never played live before.

Afterwards, some of the blessed met up at the Pilot Inn/Pub for a Led Zeppelin fan club meeting arranged by Dave Lewis, who, after all was said and done, referred to the whole experience before, during and after, as inhabiting Planet Zeppelin.

Amazingly, after all these years I'm still upset that I wasn't there and I'm still green with envy even as I type this blog post. So go ahead, ticketholders.  Torture me. Post your story of O2 in the comments.

Guitar World interviewed Jimmy Page about his Outrider tour in the October 1988 issue of the magazine. According to the interview, "...after having his initial set of demos for the album stolen, he chose not to prepare at all. Instead, he'd walk into the studio each workday with a willing heart and an open mind, simply picking up a guitar and jamming with whatever rhythm section happened to be in the room. "

Wouldn't it be wonderful if he did his next album the same way?

But I got waylaid by a paying job - I am a writer/researcher-for-hire in real life. It was a rush job with a deadline of Nov 20 and an understanding that it was not humanly possible to complete all the work in that time. Then the deadline got extended for a couple more days.

So I'm still focusing on that and not NaNoWriMo this month - and not Mage Music, either. I know this will shock you, but as important as Mage Music is in my life, it's a labor of love that doesn't pay the bills.

1966:
The Jaywalkers disbanded in 1967.  Record producer Mickie Most, long-time friend of Peter Grant's (as well as business partner in RAK Management), became Terry Reid's manager.  Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had both played sessions for Mickie Most productions before Jimmy joined up with the Yardbirds, managed by Peter Grant. There were a lot of connections between Reid and Jimmy Page, but Reid had other musical commitments and could not accept the invitation to the new venture that became Led Zeppelin.

You have to wonder just how things would have gone if... but what's done is done.

1972:
Jimmy Page was presented with a Greco guitar at the 30 September press conference in Tokyo. The Greco EG-360S, produced by the Japanese Kanda Shokai Corporation, was a replica model of Jimmy Page's Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar with a sunburst finish.

Jimmy Page and John Bohnam don't appear happy in photos from the press conference, maybe not so much about the guitar as about Greco's use of Led Zeppelin as an advertising boost with the tagline "Led Zeppelin is my brother" on the official tour programs. John Bonham demanded that Greco black out that claim before the first show. It was done.

John Paul Jones had recently obtained a Mellotron, a keyboard that can play back pre-recorded music.  It was used on this tour for the premiere of The Rain Song

1969 Backstage at Singer Bowl with Jeff Beck group (L-R: Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, unknown, Jimmy Page, Richard Cole)
1969:
Press Review – "Sunday’s (13th) Jeff Beck, Vanilla Fudge, 10 Years After, Edwin Hawkins Singers concert at Singer Bowl resulted in an unexpected jam amongst members of The Jeff Beck Group, Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. The music excited Zeppelin drummer John Bonham to the point where he started tearing his clothes off. He was carried offstage by friends before he could get past his underwear."

John Paul Jones was the only one of Led Zeppelin who didn't join Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull) and Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) on stage at the Singer Bowl for what turned out to be a rowdy encore for the Jeff Group, Jailhouse Rock.

To be fair, Bonzo wasn't simply tearing off his clothes, he was also drumming The Stripper while acting it out.

"It was one of those riotous sorts of day, everyone's energy level was 100 percent ... It was just one of those animal things. Three English groups at the same place has to add up to trouble!"

1985:
"It's twelve noon in London, seven AM in Philadelphia, and around the world it's time for Live Aid ...."
~ Richard Skinner opening the Live Aid concerts.
The Live Aid concerts (two venues on the same day) were organized to raise funds for the ongoing famine in Ethiopia. The venues were Wembley Stadium in London, England and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, USA. It was broadcast via satellite and had an estimated audience of nearly 2 billion. The combined concerts lasted 16 hours, although with some performances occurring simultaneously, the actual number of hours of performance was longer than that.

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones' performance was referred to as a Led Zeppelin reunion. Tony Thompson and Phil Collins took John Bonham's place at the drums. The set list was Rock and Roll, Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven.

It was not a great show for the boys. Robert Plant was hoarse, Jimmy Page's guitar was out of tune, neither drummer had rehearsed with Plant, Page and Jones, and the monitors were malfunctioning. (Phil Collins' performed at both venues.  He did a solo set at Wembley, then took a Concorde supersonic jet to JFK Airport and a helicopter to JFK Stadium, where he joined the Led Zeppelin reunion).

Led Zeppelin's wasn't the only reunion - prompting some to refer to the shows as "geezer events" - and theirs wasn't the only problematic performance. There was further criticism of the Live Aid effort as it appeared that a good amount of the funds raised ended up being siphoned off by corrupt Ethiopian government. The official four-disc Live Aid DVD set, released in 2004, contains only 10-hours of the concert. Led Zeppelin and Santana requested to be not included on the DVD set because they felt their performances were sub-standard. Because of the immense audience there are, of course, many recordings out there.

Chris Robinson, in an interview two weeks later, said the breakup was due to an unwillingness to write new songs.
