Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin inducted in the R&R Hall of Fame

  • 1969 Led Zeppelin I released
  • 1969 Led Zeppelin - San Francisco, at Fillmore West (day 4 of 4)
  • 1975 Led Zeppelin - Brussels, at Vorst Nationaal
  • 1995 Led Zeppelin - inducted in Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame
1995
Twenty-six years after Led Zeppelin I hit the world, Led Zeppelin finally got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Steven Tyler did the induction honors, Tyler opening with a poor imitation of Robert Plant, prompting the latter to whisper, "You wish."

When John Paul Jones took the mic, he made the famous statement that's been quoted so often over the years: "Thank you, my friends, for finally remembering my phone number", referring to the fact that Jones had not been invited to join the Page/Plant Unledded project.
“Well, for my part of this, I must say it's a great honor to be inducted. Actually it's the second time for me, 'cause actually, earlier when I was inducted with the Yardbirds. It's almost like, inducted, induced, and this time it's the forceps. Some of you will get that. But anyway, thank you very much everybody.”

1990:
Train Kept A-Rollin' has been around a while. It was first recorded in 1951 by Tiny Bradshaw as a jump blues song (up-tempo blues that became popular in the 1940s, the precursor to rhythm and blues and rock and roll). The Johnny Burnette Trio added a repeating three-note minor key guitar line with intentionally distorted guitar (achieved by loosening a tube in the guitar amp), leading the way for The Yardbirds in 1965.

With The Yardbirds the song became Stroll On, as seen in the movie Blowup, with Jimmy Page on bass. He took the song with him to Led Zeppelin, reverting to the song's original name and, of course, to the guitar. When the four who were to become Led Zeppelin rehearsed together for the first time in 1968, the first song they took on was Train Kept A Rollin'.

John Paul Jones:
"...we did 'Train'... It was there immediately. It was so powerful that I don't remember what we played after that. For me it was just like, 'Crikey!' I mean, I'd had moments of elation with groups before, but nothing as intense as that. It was like a thunderbolt, a lightning flash – boosh! Everyone sort of went 'Wow'."

1990:
Monsters of Rock was an annual rock and heavy metal music festival begun in 1979 at Castle Donington, England. It branched out to other countries and then fizzled out in the late 1990s. Castle Donington has hosted the Download Festival since 2003.

In his autobiography, Joe Perry wrote about his introduction to rock and roll when he was a teen: "This band called the Yardbirds...had guitars that sound like nothing I'd ever heard before." By Donington in 1990, Perry had been a huge Jimmy Page fan for decades.

In 1990 Whitesnake was back at Monsters of Rock Festival for the third time, and Aerosmith was to perform there for the first time. David Coverdale, of course, was/is the frontman for Whitesnake. Coverdale had been giving some thought to breaking up the band. He was tired of the music business, tired of touring, and was having problems in his personal life.  He told interviewers that he wanted time to reassess his live and career.

As it turned out, his retirement was brief. Both he and Jimmy Page were signed up with Geffen Records, and by the following year the two had collaborated on the Coverdale/Page album.

"...it is boggling that in a matter of months they have achieved such a high degree of musicianship and become one of the biggest crowd pullers around."
~ (NME, July ’69)
Led Zeppelin performed at two "Pop Proms" shows in one night at Royal Albert Hall, appearing with the sax players from The Liverpool Scene and Mick Abraham's Blodwyn Pigs for the final jam Long Tall Sally.  The performance was wild, with the audience dancing in the aisles and throwing flowers and paper airplanes onto the stage.

"Prom" is short for promenade concert.  The term was originally used for the concerts in the pleasure gardens of London, where the audience could stroll about while listening to the music. The BBC's eight-week summer seasons of daily orchestral classical music and other concerts and other events take place primarily in the Royal Albert Hall in London. "Pop Prom" refers to the popular music offerings. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones performed at a Pop Prom in 1963, the first of only two times when they appeared on the same bill.

Long Tall Sally was a song originally recorded by Little Richard (Richard Penniman) and released in 1956. It has been covered by hundreds of artists, including Elvis and the Beatles, though of course some of us know that Led Zeppelin did it best. The band used Long Tall Sally for encores in 1969 and 1970.
