1984:
The Old Grey Whistle Test was a TV Show that aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. The name supposedly was from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before.

Tin Pan Alley was a group of New York City music publishers and songwriters of the late 19th century and early 20th century.  The Whistle Test was the playing of the first pressing of a record to an audience of the buildings' doormen, who wore grey suits. If the song was catchy enough for it to be whistled back after hearing it a couple times, it passed the test.

I cant' say Roy Harper's music would pass the Mage Music Whistle Test, but Jimmy Page's?  You betcha. Every time.

Guy Fawkes was a conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, a failed assassination attempt against King James meant to install the king's Catholic daughter, Elizabeth, on the throne.  Guy Fawkes was in charge of the explosives that would take out the House of Lords.  The plot failed when the conspirators were ratted out in an anonymous letter.  He and the others were condemned to be hanged, drawn and quartered, but Fawkes jumped off the scaffold and broke his neck to avoid the agony of the sentence.  The failed Gunpowder Ploth has been commemorated in Britain ever since then, with his effigy burned on a bonfire, usually accompanied by a firework display.

The burning of effigies (models of humans) as protest or sacrifice to the gods has been around a long time. Druids' burning of Wicker Man was recorded by Julius Caesar, and today, besides Guy Fawkes, we have the Burning Man Festival in Nevada, Zozobra in Santa Fe, the burning of the Hindu demon king Ravana in India, and others.

This was the third performance in a row at Madison Square Garden. At the end of Whole Lotta Love, East Indian fire-eater Mike Quashie came dancing out on the stage with a couple of torches. He lit John Bonham's gong and one drumstick, but Bonzo just kept on playing.

This is the show where the robbery occurred of MSG receipts from the safety deposit box at the Drake Hotel. Originally reported as $203,000, the amount was $180,000 and no one was ever arrested for the theft. The band later sued the hotel and received a settlement.

After the show, the band went to a party held by Ahmet Ertegun to present gold records for Houses of the Holy.

This final night was also the final performance in this 1973 North American tour.

Day two of the Madison Square Garden show. More firecrackers. The band was asked to wear the same outfits for the sake of the filming that was being done. Mr. Jones was the only one of the four who didn't comply.

We don't think of Jimmy Page as a folk guitarist, but of course he has demonstrated he can play any musical genre he wants to, and do it well.

The Cambridge Folk Festival's first show was in 1965.  Paul Simon and just about a dozen others were on the bill, and 1400 tickets were sold. Simon earned £15 for his performance. Since then the festival has expanded and now includes non-folk performers as well. In 2014 there were more than a hundred acts featured over four days, including Van Morrison, SinĂ©ad O’Connor and Rosanne Cash.

On This Day 01 May

In 2015 Jimmy Page remembers hearing Fred Gerlach's version of Gallows Pole. Also on this day in 1971 Roy Harper's album Stormcock was released. Jimmy Page played on one track.

2015 01 May On This Day Gallows Pole

1962 Fred Gerlach recorded for Smithsonian Folkways

Huddie William Ledbetter (1888 – 1949) was an American folk and blues musician best known as Lead Belly (his preferred spelling).  He usually played the twelve-string guitar but, like John Paul Jones, Lead Belly could also play other musical instruments:  piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and accordion.

Lead Belly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Fred Gerlach (1925 - 2009) carried the mantle from Lead Belly. In 1962 he recorded an album for Folkways Records of his traditional blues singing and intricate twelve-string guitar technique.
