We don't think of Jimmy Page as a folk guitarist, but of course he has demonstrated he can play any musical genre he wants to, and do it well.

"Big" Jim Sullivan (1941 - 2012) on Jimmy Page (a.k.a. "Little Jim"):
"I'll always remember the first time I met Jimmy. We had a session at Decca studios for Dave Berry. It was the session for 'My Baby Left Me' and Jimmy played lead guitar and I played rhythm. I remember the great solo that he did on that session, it is one of the best constructed rock solos on record.

"The rhythm section that played on a lot of the 60's group record consisted of Jimmy, myself, John Baldwin or John Paul Jones as he liked to be called, and Bobby Graham on Drums. The amount of recordings we did together was amazing and when he said he and John were going to leave he said I should join them too. I said I was married and would stay in sessions a while longer."

1946:
On this day, John Baldwin was born.  Baldwin is, of course, better known today as John Paul Jones, bassist, keyboardist and composer with Led Zeppelin and now embarked on an independent musical career, including the 2009 band, Them Crooked Vultures, with Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme (and guitarist Alain Johannes during live performances).

Interestingly enough, the "other" John Paul Jones, born in 1747, was born John Paul and also adopted the last names "Jones".  However that JPJ did so to hide from law enforcement after winning a duel.

The night after the ARMS benefit, the same group of master musicians performed at another benefit concert at the Royal Albert Hall, the Prince's Trust Rock Gala.  The Prince's Trust was founded in 1976 by HRH The Prince Of Wales to support 13 to 30 year olds who are unemployed, struggling at school and who are at risk of exclusion. The first Prince's Trust Rock Gala was held at the Dominion Tottenham Court Road in 1982.

2005:
Jimmy Page was awarded honorary citizenship in the state of Rio de Janeiro for his work with Brazil's poor and abandoned children via "Casa Jimmy,'' a residential shelter. The honorary citizenship was approved by the state legislature on Sept. 9, 2004 but Jimmy Page was unable to receive the award until a year later. His work in Brazil helped earn him the title Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, one of Britain's highest honors, awarded by Queen Elizabeth in June, 2005.

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones held a press conference in London after launching the screening of Celebration Day, the concert film of the 2007 O2 reunion show.

The press conference covered the show, the band’s early career and the possibility of a reunion, with Page, Plant and Jones avoiding questions about any future reunion. At one point, Jimmy Page said, “Can I ask you a question? You’ve all been to see the film. Did you enjoy it?”

Asked why it took so long to release the DVD, John Paul Jones responded, “Five years is like five minutes in Zeppelin time.”

On this day in 2013 Jimmy Page attended the third annual Jester’s Care for Kids Gala Party Night, a fundraiser put on by Thailand's Jester's Motorcycle Club to benefit the Care for Kids charity. Jimmy Page supports this charty by attending the Gala Parties and donating items to be auctioned for the cause. • 1968 Led Zeppelin - Stockholm, Sweden at Inside Club
  • 1971 Led Zeppelin - Berkeley, CA at Berkeley Community Theatre

1968 Led Zeppelin at Inside Club, Stockholm (as Yardbirds - not even "new")
1968:
“It has been up and down for the Yardbirds. A couple of years ago, they were on top. For a while, a lot of people thought that the Yardbirds would lead the developing English pop but their efforts led nowhere.
The members changed and the Yardbirds currently touring Sweden have very little in common with the original line-up. It is not only the line-up that has changed. The style of music is different, as is the quality - only the name is the same.
Friday night they played the Inside. They were so loud it almost hurt. Sometimes playing loud has an important role in pop, but here it was just superficial effect”.
~ Stockholm Daily News Press Review:  9.14.1968 (transcription:LZ The Press Reports, 1997)
The question is, would the review have been the same if the band billed as Yardbirds was already known by their proper name, Led Zeppelin, or even The New Yardbirds? Would the volume have been the only thing the reviewer managed to comment on?

1971:
"...loud, boisterous and very deafening..."  (Oakland Tribune)  Perhaps the problem was that Led Zeppelin was always meant to play humongous venues - to play to the world, not to a small crowd in a high school theater. Perhaps Berkeley was too cool for Led Zeppelin, too much in love with what they considered their own house band, the Grateful Dead. Whatever the reason, today it seems incredible that the audience was so unresponsive.
