Confused about the winter solstice and why some of us celebrate the solstice on one day and others the next? This crazy planet of ours is tilted!  It's all good, though, and what it means is that we can celebrate it two days in a row if we want to.

As with any major event in one's life, there are always things that stand out. For me, it was me feeling so impatient with Jack White's and The Edge's scenes in It Might Get Loud. Yeah, yeah, they're great. Now let's see Jimmy Page. Because to me, it's a movie about him.

I suppose there are Jack White and The Edge fans who think the movie's about them. Bwahahaha! No way!

Winter solstice 2023

A henge is a type of earthwork of the Neolithic period, generally consisting of a roughly circular bank with an internal ditch surrounding a central flat area that may or may not contain ritual structures of various kinds. About 8 miles north of Salisbury, England, where Led  Zeppelin played on this day in 1971, Stonehenge is aligned to the winter solstice. Although it is one of the most well-known henges, Stonehenge in fact atypical in that the ditch is outside the main earthworks.

Just like Jimmy Page:  He's a guitarist but atypical. Outside the norm. But you knew that.

The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year when the planet's polar cap is pointed farthest from the sun (December in the northern hemisphere, June in the southern). Festivals, religious ceremonies and rituals mark and celebrate the next morning's "rebirth" of the sun, or of deities, or simply of the hope for survival till warm weather arrives again.

In 2023, the exact winter solstice is Friday, 22 December 2023 at 03:27 UTC (21 December EST at 10:27 EST in the US). At Stonehenge that is the wee hours of the morning on the 22nd, but the celebration begins when the sun rises after the long, chilly night and lights the standing stones of the henge. Pass the time by listening to appropriate music

Remember, it wasn't Lucifer who kept humans in the dark, it has always been Lucifer's detractors who shrink from the light.

Welcome to the winter solstice!

It's all connected:
Jimmy Page was employed as producer, session musician and A&R scout for Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate Records label in 1965. Jimmy Page produced and played on Nico’s 1965 singles for Immediate, I'm Not Sayin' / The Last Mile.

Oldham was manager and producer of The Rolling Stones from 1963 to 1967. Brian Jones was the founder and original bandleader of the Rolling Stones, and in 1966 Jimmy Page worked with Brian Jones recording the soundtrack to the 1967 movie, A Degree of Murder. Jones' broke up with his girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg, and shortly after was seen enjoying the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967 with Nico.

Nico had met Bob Dylan a few years before and had traveled with him around Europe while Dylan worked on songs for his fourth album, 1964's Another Side of Bob Dylan.  During that time Dylan wrote a song for Nico's 1967 Chelsea Girl album called I'll Keep It With Mine.  Chelsea Girl was released in October 1967 by Verve Records, The Velvet Underground's label. According to some sources, Bob Dylan had introduced Nico to Andy Warhol, who had done a "screen test" of Dylan in 1965 or 1966, and Warhol introduced her to Lou Reed's band, The Velvet Underground.

The album The Velvet Underground & Nico was produced in 1972 by Andy Warhol. While it didn't sell many copies at the time, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number thirteen on their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".  But then, Rolling Stone ranked Led Zeppelin's first album only 29th (that was in 2015, it's now dropped farther down),.  The magazine's music critics never have much liked Led Zeppelin, so take their ranking for what it's worth.

To continue...
Transformer was Lou Reed's second solo studio album. One of the tracks, Walk On The Wild Side, became Lou Reed's signature song. The 1972 album was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, and the cover art photography was by Mick Rock, David Bowie's official photographer.  Rock continued photographing Lou Reed and other musicians over the decades.

Mick Rock has put out a number of photographic books. He and Lou Reed launched a Genesis Publications limited edition book, Transformer, in London in September 2013. Jimmy Page was at the event. Reed died October 27, 2013.

1977:
There were two Jimmy Page/Ron Wood charity jams in 1977.  The first was on this day at the Half Moon Pub, which was very close to Jimmy Page's Plumpton Place home and studio.  The second was 17 September.  Both acoustic jam events were to benefit the Goaldiggers football charity that provides playing fields in under-privileged areas. Elton John released a single for the charity in 1977, The Goaldiggers Song.

2009 14 August - It Might Get Loud opens in select theaters in NY, WA & CA
2009:
The short description of the movie It Might Get Loud might be stated like this: the individual histories of three generations of rock guitarists are shown and then the guitarists come together and jam. But the 2008 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim is, for those who know, a movie about an elemental - that is, Jimmy Page - and two younger guitarists who practice the art of music.

Just look at the Edge's and Jack White's faces when Jimmy Page hits the first notes of Whole Lotta Love. Those are the looks of people in the presence of one of their gods manifesting his Power. They don't hide how they feel and we know why.

What? You don't know? Well, this is a blog about music AND magic, isn't it? Who else but Jimmy Page embodies both?

David Edward Sutch (1940-1999) was not of the nobility although he was known as 3rd Earl of Harrow, and although he was the UK's longest serving party leader, he was never elected to office. In fact, Screaming Lord Such was an English musician who gave himself his own title, started his own political party, and used the money earned from concerts to pay for his political campaigning . Lord Sutch was a shock-rocker before the term was invented. His 1970 debut album Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends was produced by Jimmy Page and featured Jimmy Page and John Bonham among others. It was named as the worst album of all time in a 1998 BBC poll, which is kind of too bad since aside from Sutch's vocals the music is just fine.

1994:
For all you grammar police types out there, Marrakech and Marrakesh are both acceptable spellings for the former Moroccan imperial city.

Alan Lomax (1915-2002) was an American field collector of folk music traditions from around the world.

Jimmy Page mentions the Berber women's fierceness and no wonder. Berbers are an ancient nomadic people of the deserts of Northern Africa. Before they were called Berbers, their name meant “free man“.  Berber women are no less determined than Berber men to preserve their ethnic identity and the fierce independence of their people. One of the great Berber religious and military leaders was the Berber queen, Kahina, who in the 7th century led resistance to Arab Islamic expansion in Northwest Africa. She was a believer in the scorched earth policy.

The word Gnawa has three meanings: The people, originally brought to Morocco as slaves and free farmers (some as slaves to the Berbers); a religious/spiritual order; and the deeply hypnotic trance music associated with the religious/spiritual order that is used in the magical treatment of physical and psychic ailments.  The music has a parallel with American blues, music that also has roots in slavery.  More on Gnawa music.

  • 2009 Premier of It Might Get Loud, Los Angeles

An outrider is someone who goes in front of or beside as an escort or guard, a forerunner, someone who announces or signals the approach of another. In his 1988 album, Outrider, Jimmy Page was saying he was still not part of the herd, was still out there pushing the envelope.

Jimmy Page recorded Outrider with a new label, Geffen Records, and at his own studio, The Sol (where he also recorded the soundtrack for Death Wish II and both of The Firm's albums).  He also used different vocalists, drummers and bassists for the songs, and one third of the tracks are instrumentals (my favorite tracks on the album).  The common thread on the various Outrider tracks, of course, is Jimmy Page's guitar. Jimmy Page is the outrider.

This was an entirely under-appreciated album. I suspect part of the problem was that Jimmy Page was riding out too far for the rest of the herd to keep up.

Side one
1. "Wasting My Time" (John Miles, vocals)
2. "Wanna Make Love" (John Miles, vocals)
3. "Writes of Winter" (Instrumental)
4. "The Only One" (Robert Plant, vocals)
5. "Liquid Mercury" (Instrumental)

Side two
6. "Hummingbird" (Chris Farlowe, vocals)
7. "Emerald Eyes" (Instrumental)
8. "Prison Blues" (Chris Farlowe, vocals)
9. "Blues Anthem (If I Cannot Have Your Love...)" (Chris Farlowe, vocals)
Outrider was to be a two album release but JimmyPage's house was broken into and burgled.  The early tapes for Outrider were stolen along with Led Zeppelin masters.  They have never been recovered.

The movie, It Might Get Loud, premiered in Los Angeles on 19 June 2009. Meant to be a documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians, Jimmy Page steals the show.
