UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG. I'm working on another (time consuming) project that takes precedence. Note that info on this page has not been fully updated yet and links may not work properly. Thank you for your patience.

Please listen to the song. And I don't mean the "popular" version.

1996:
Jimmy Page kind of bumbled his way into the two songs I've linked to below from the Tokyo show on this day. As Robert Plant said, though, about Tea for One it wasn't a song that Led Zeppelin had every played live in its entirety, and it was the first time that Robert Plant had performed it with Jimmy Page on guitar.

Back in 1976 when Tea for One was recorded for Presence, Robert Plant's leg was still in a cast. Two versions were recorded at that session, one with a guitar solo and one without. I'm soooo glad that the one with the solo is the one that ended up on the album.

2009:
I've provided links below to two versions of Please Read the Letter.  I fail to see why the Plant/Krauss version was the one that got the acclaim, but then, I am into rock music not syrupy folk love songs. No accounting for taste.

1966:
Cliff Richard, born Harry Webb, is a British pop singer, musician, actor and philanthropist. He is the third-top-selling singles artist in UK Chart history after the Beatles and Elvis Presley. His backing band, The Shadows, grew from 1950s UK skiffle groups. They started out as The Drifters with Harry Webb on vocals and guitar and using the stage name, Cliff Richard. Cliff Richard and the Shadows dominated British pop music in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and Jimmy Page would have been quite aware of them. The Shadows split in 1968 but reformed with new members a few years later and continued to to perform and tour through a final tour in 2010.

In 1980, Richard changed his to his stage name legally and also that year he received the O.B.E. from the Queen for services to music and charity. In 1995, Richard was appointed a Knight Bachelor, the first rock star to be awarded that honor.

Jimmy Page wasn't needed for his guitar or bass talents on the Cliff Richard songs, but he was called on for his skills with harmonica. The video below for Time Drags By is from the movie referred to in the On This Day post - you don't need me to tell you that the actor pretending to play harmonica isn't Jimmy Page.  Don't confuse La La La Song (a.k.a. La La La La) with Led Zeppelin's La La, either. They don't sound at all alike. But interesting about the name.

Check out the harmonica on Coverdale/Page's Pride and Joy (below), at approximately 1:46-2:36. That's Jimmy Page you hear. JP played electric guitars, acoustic guitar, bass; harmonica, and dulcimer on the album.

  • 1972 Led Zeppelin - Tokyo, Japan at Budokan Hall (day 2)
  • 1995 Page & Plant - Irvine, California at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre

1969
By now Led Zeppelin was in the musical spotlight. This gig was at a seaside resort, Scheveninger, and according to the inexperienced road manager of the opening band, Steamhammer, the Grant/Cole duo was formidable: They insisted that "the slightly dodgy Dutch promoter" pay them in full before the show. Apparently there was no argument, the money was forked over.

1972
For some reason a commentator noted that during the acoustic set, John Bonham joined in with his "transvestite vocal cords". 'The Song Remains The Same' had not yet been fully formed. Not only were they tinkering with the song but also its title. Plant introduced it as 'Zep' the night before, this night Plant called it 'The Overture'. It was also called "The Campaign" before the title was finalized.
