On This Day 03 April

It started long ago. It's not over yet.
1968 03 April On This Day The Yardbirds' last studio recording session

  • 1970 Led Zeppelin - Macon GA at Macon Coliseum
  • 1977 Led Zeppelin - Oklahoma City at The Myriad
  • 1979 Bonham, Page & Plant encore with Bad Company - Birmingham England at Odeon at Theatre
  • 1986 The Firm - Uniondale NY at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
  • 1995 Page & Plant Unledded Tour - Philadelphia PA at The Spectrum (day 1 of 2)

1968:
The five tracks recorded by The Yardbirds on this day were not released immediately. Avron Knows, Hold On Me, Spanish Blood, and My Baby appeared on The Yardbirds' 2000 album, Cumular Limit, while Knowing That I'm Losing You reappeared as Tangerine on Led Zeppelin III.

If you don't listen to anything else linked below, listen to Jimmy Page's guitar work in Spanish Blood.  Um... PG rated at the end, but that's not why I'm recommending it.
1977 Jimmy Page / Led Zeppelin, Oklahoma City

1977 Jimmy Page / Led Zeppelin, Oklahoma City
1979:
John Bonham, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant jammed with Bad Company at Bad Company's Birmingham Odeon gig on this day for the encore numbers, Long Tall Sally (featuring Page and Bonham) and Going Down (featuring Plant, Page and Bonham). You would think that someone would have recorded this, but apparently not.

2013:
Gene Simmons, his wife Shannon and son Nick happened to be at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York when Ross Halfin walked over to say hello. When Gene saw that Jimmy Page was with Ross he grabbed his phone to take photos.  When the photos were posted by Gene, his comment was, "Hail the RiffMaster of them all"

  • 1971 Led Zeppelin - Toronto, Canada at Maple Leaf Gardens
  • 1974 Jimmy Page with Bad Company - Central Park, NYC at Schaefer Music Festival
  • 1998 Page & Plant - Vancouver, Canada, rehearsal at General Motors Place
1970:
Following the show at the Forum, the four members of Led Zeppelin and Peter Grant showed up at the Troubadour Club for Fairport Convention 's second set and jammed with them. Sandy Denny was Fairport Convention's singer. Denny was later to contribute vocals on Led Zeppelin's The Battle of Evermore. She was the only guest vocalist Led Zeppelin ever recorded with. During later live performances of the song John Paul Jones sang Denny's vocals, with sometimes John Bonham joining in.

During the jam, Bonham attacked Dave Mattacks' drums with his usual enthusiasm. Later Mattacks had to repair the kit and replace the heads. It was reported that the bass drum jumped forward three or four inches with Bonzo's first strike.

The story goes that after the Fairport/Zeppelin jam they all moved to the after hours bar, Barney's Beanery, where Janis Joplin was hanging out. A drinking contest between Fairport's Dave Pegg, Bonham and Janis Joplin ensued. No report of a winner has surfaced.

The jam was taped, and according to Dave Lewis, it ended up in Peter Grant's possession. That recording has not surfaced, either.

Bad Company had only begun performing live in May of 1974.  Their first album, Bad Company, was released by Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label.  Jimmy Page joined Bad Company for an encore of Rock Me Baby at the Shaefer Music Festival in New York's Central Park on September 4, 1974.

In 1983, Jimmy Page appeared with the ARMS charity concert series.  Steve Winwood provided vocals for Jimmy Page's set at the first shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Paul Rodgers, of Bad Company, replaced Winwood for the four-city ARMS tour in the United States.  Rodgers joined Jimmy Page in The Firm in 1985 and 1986.

Bad Company was good for Swan Song
1974 15 June On This Day Bad Company's first album released by Swan Song.
Bad Company was the first band that Swan Song Record's signed to the label.
Bad Company was founded by former Free singer Paul Rodgers in 1973. Joining Rodgers was drummer Simon Kirke (Free), guitarist Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople ) and bassist Boz Burrell (King Crimson). It was not a surprised that the band signed to Swan Song Records/Atlantic Records since Peter Grant was Bad Company's manager.

Led Zeppelin's first recordings for Physical Graffiti took place in November 1973 at Headley Grange using Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio. Led Zeppelin turned it all over to Bad Company to record their debut album, Bad Company. Swan Song Records was launched in May 1974 and Bad Company was the first US release for the label.
